AboutAbout Tango Open Center

Tango Textile factory

We are opening the Tango Open Center’s silk textile refining factory to the general public, and starting operation of a directly-managed store on a permanent basis. In Japan’s foremost production area of piece-dyed pure silk textiles for traditional Japanese apparel (outer material), it is now possible for the public to tour the processing floor of the refining factory, which many consider to be the most important part. At the Open Factory, we are operating “The World of Refining,” a factory tour which offers a complete view of the refining process for Tango chirimen.
In addition, with the opening of the Factory Shop (a directly-managed shop), we are also holding workshops that allow you to experience the enjoyment of Tango chirimen. Please come and see the secrets of Tango chirimen with a history of more than 300 years.

About Refining

Refining is the process of using a hot bath containing soap and other chemicals to wash away impurities in raw silk thread, including a type of protein called sericin. This process restores the twist of the warp and weft threads, and only then does it become a pure white silk fabric with a soft texture and pleasant feel with the distinctive crinkled surface of chirimen.

About Tango Chirimen

Tango chirimen is a traditional textile with a three-dimensional texture, and this traditional technique celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2020. This piece-dyed textile is made with hard twist warp and weft threads, and going through the refining process gives the surface of the fabric crinkles called “shibo.” After the products undergo rigorous inspection, we stamp them with the brand mark, and the high-quality, richly textured Tango chirimen is complete.

Tango has a long tradition and history as a silk textile producing region, with the creation of ashiginu in the Nara period, kosode in the Muromachi period, chirimen and its distinctive crinkled surface in the Edo period, and following the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods, it has come to occupy an established position today as an integrated center for the weaving and dyeing of everything from traditional Japanese apparel to clothing fabric.
The local community is an integrated production area capable of carrying out all the processes involved in manufacturing and development of textiles in one place. Expert techniques and experience cultivated over many years as a silk-producing area are utilized in the refining, dyeing, and finishing processes. At the processing factory directly-managed by the association, we contribute to clothing and fashion culture with processing techniques tailored to the needs of the market.
